The best filter media on the market: Helix 14 is made from recycled HDPE material and due to its shape provides a huge surface area for bacteria to settle. This bacteria is essential for reducing the ammoniac, ammonium and nitrite content in your pond. Furthermore Helix 14 also helps to reduce a significant amount of nitrate when used in open filter chambers. The Helix 14 design is similar to Kaldnes K1 but it has an even bigger protected surface area. The efficiency of Helix 14 is about 40 times better than common “big” bio balls, 10 times better than standard filter foam mats and around 3-4 times more efficient than Japanese filter mats. How to use Helix 14: Helix 14 can be used as a “Moving Bed” media or static. The “Moving Bed” process provides a permanent replacement of dead biomass as this biomass will fall off the Helix 14 due to the permanent collisions in the water. Therefore Helix 14 is so efficient. To operate the filter chamber with “Moving Bed” process, simply add Helix 14 up to 30% of the total chamber volume. Then provide proper aeration using air stones. The air stones provide oxygen for good bacteria development and they also keep the Helix 14 moving. Please note that it is normal that the filter media might not move within the first week or two. This is due to lack of biomass on the media during that period. The biomass needs between 4 to 8 weeks to fully develop. When using Helix 14 as a static media we recommend to fill it in a suitable bag and add it to the filter chamber so that the chamber is fully filled with Helix 14. The Helix 14 will now act as a mechanical as well as a biological filter. Please note that using this process requires a regular cleaning. To clean the Helix 14 simply take out the bag ad wash it with water (please do not use high-pressure units for cleaning!) 100 liters of fully developed Helix 14 can process up to 0,5 kg of food daily if the moving bed process is used. A general guideline is 75 liters per 10 tons of water. |
